Wolfenstein RPG comes from the makers of DOOM RPG and Orcs & Elves, id Software. Like these titles, it thrusts you into a mobile adventure just itching to be played, this time taking a page from the classic WWII PC series where your hero, B.J. Blazkowicz, must escape the castle stronghold.
If you have played DOOM RPG or either of the Orcs & Elves titles, you’ll be very familiar with what Wolfenstein RPG has to offer in terms of gameplay and surprises. It’s a first-person shooter of sorts that has a more tactical style because of turn-based actions and leveling up your character, but it’s also very enthralling because it immerses you in a world of secrets and intrigue due to its creative storyline.
There are nine levels to battle through that comprise not just escaping from the enemy soldiers, but taking down the Axis’ Paranormal Division and its unleashed hordes of monsters. Crawling the castle and dungeons, you’ll come across the usual array of weapons and secret rooms that you’ve witnessed before, albeit WWII style, but there are also plenty of other forms of diversion to keep this sort of game fresh.
One of the newer features is that you can mix different liquids and create your own potions to inject for particular attack and defense strengths. Others include the use of sniper rifles, dynamite and hand-to-hand combat, sometimes even the toilet! Also, two new mini-games have been included and they are the card game WAR and the other is Kick the Chicken, both for points. Aside from giving you something else to do in the game, these two help convey the continued sense of humor that’s been previously seen in the other mobile RPG titles by id.
Like those titles as well, this game has legs to keep you playing for hours. Sure, you can continue playing it through one long sitting if you choose, but with save points at any time, you can set it down and go along your merry way, or play Kick the Chicken for laughs. One thing I will say though is that the visuals haven’t improved much from the previous titles, but the sound is still great.
What I really like about this game is that it continues the pedigree of the previous games and wraps it up in a completely different theme to give it its own standalone feel. You can say to yourself that it’s more of the same, but really, for this type of game, that’s a great thing. I’ve enjoyed all of the games before this one, and Wolfenstein RPG is no different. It’s a fun adventure with lots to do and play and it should be on your download list.
