Thanks to Activision, the hottest new style of music-rhythm game is one that has people mixing it up on the turntables and pretending to be a bona fide DJ. While I still don't get how fun “pretending” to be some sort of musician is, as opposed to actually doing the real thing, I suppose there will always be plenty of people to get their kicks from this. By looking at it in those terms, Delicious Vinyl DJ is pretty darn good.
The game currently offers seven classic hits, such as Bust a Move and Wild Thing, for which to hit the turntables with. In typical music game fashion, the objective is to match the multi-colored notes as they flow down the screen. What's different here though, is that you have two turntables and two buttons, for which to trigger the samples from. This lends a bit to the realism of being behind the decks.
So while pressing the buttons is nothing new, the turntables are what make the game more interesting. They rotate, so you must control the direction of their rotation, depending on what the notes tell you to do. Clockwise or counter clockwise, is one thing, but then you can also do a quick up/down motion in order to scratch. It's a great little mechanic that works flawlessly, but does make the game tough.
Each track features three levels of difficulty, and they are full-length so there's plenty of playing time. Additionally, you can buy the song directly from the App for your iTunes library, as well as expect more songs in future uploads. I really like the fact that these future updates are, at this time, free, meaning that you won't be asked to drop more cash in the future, just to have more fun. That's a cool gimme from the developer.
Unfortunately this isn't a real DJ mixer, but if you're just into the whole music rhythm thing, it'll work just fine. The video is cool, and the audio is great, so you certainly won't be disappointed with Delicious Vinyl DJ. It's a change of pace with the turntables and mechanics, and at only $2.99, it's a decent deal.
